our sustainability measures

At Hotel Gerardus, a premium guest experience and responsibility for our planet go hand in hand. From the design of our hotel to its daily operations, we strive to ensure the highest level of comfort while maintaining the smallest possible ecological footprint.

When designing our building, we looked beyond mere energy efficiency and adhered to the highest standards of sustainability and environmental consciousness—keeping both the comfort of our guests and the protection of the planet in mind.

our hotel's carbon footprint

In 2025, in accordance with the methodology of the Hotel Carbon Measurement Initiative (HCMI)—the international hotel industry standard—we conducted a comprehensive assessment of our hotel's greenhouse gas emissions.

In 2025, our hotel's total carbon footprint was approximately 177 tonnes of CO2e. Calculated per guest night, this represents less than 8 kg of CO2e, and 13 kg per occupied room.

What lies behind these good results?

LEED Silver certification

During both its design and construction, Hotel Gerardus met the rigorous requirements of the internationally recognized LEED green building certification system, earning a LEED Silver certification. Currently, only four hotels in Hungary hold this prestigious designation, with Hotel Gerardus being one of them.

Energy efficiency rating

The hotel was handed over in 2023, making it a state-of-the-art, modern building. During its design and construction, it met the requirements for nearly zero-energy buildings, earning a BB energy efficiency rating as a result.

 Solar energy

In 2025, the 200 kWp solar farm operating alongside the hotel produced nearly 200,000 kWh of electricity—covering more than one-third of our total electricity needs directly from our own solar farm.

Further energy efficiency

The cornerstone of our energy efficiency is high-performance building insulation combined with state-of-the-art mechanical and electrical systems. Renewable thermal energy plays a key role in our heating system and hot water supply, significantly reducing our ecological footprint.

Modern building

Thanks to its construction in 2023, our building's energy consumption remains well below the Hungarian hotel industry average.

Creating indoor comfort

Our energy-efficient air handling systems continuously provide clean air and an optimal temperature throughout the hotel's interior spaces.

Green space & green roof design

With the construction of Hotel Gerardus, both the extent and quality of green spaces have increased. During the garden and park landscaping, we planted drought-tolerant plants adapted to the local climate alongside a diverse variety of tree species, which not only create a shady grove for our guests but also provide a valuable habitat for local wildlife.

Water consumption

to preserve our precious water resources, we use water-efficient fixtures inside the building, while in our garden, a smart irrigation system and carefully selected, drought-tolerant vegetation ensure sustainable and minimal water use.

Drinkable tap water

High-quality, safe drinking tap water is readily available in Szeged. We encourage our guests to use refillable water bottles instead of single-use plastic bottles and fill them with tap water.

Selective waste collection

We strive to leave the smallest possible ecological footprint through our operations, which is why single-use plastic bottles have been replaced by sustainable alternatives, and our kitchen minimizes food waste through careful planning.

Electric mobility

We support our internal operations with electric vehicles and provide dedicated EV chargers for our guests, making travel both seamless and eco-friendly.

Voluntary, environmentally conscious operation is a commitment for us. We are dedicated to maintaining an energy-efficient, sustainable hotel that guarantees a healthy environment.

Our achievements are not only a source of pride, but also point the way to our next steps. We are currently working on greening our textile management and transport, while continuously measuring the reduction of our footprint.
